Domenico and Maria were married in Lentini, Provincia di Siracusa in Sicily, on May 1, 1918. He was 21 years old, and she was to turn 18 later that month. A little more that two years later, with Maria pregnant of their first child, Domenico left for America to join Maria's brother Salvatore Maci, in Omaha, Nebraska, where many people from Lentini were headed. Omaha was a popular destination for the men and families of Lentini and the nearby town of Carlentini. The Omaha attraction primarily was a community of friends and relatives that would serve as sponsors and supporters. The Italians of this era rarely left their villages and had a tremendous attachment to their hometown unlike today's mobile society. There were two brothers who became labor agents and recruited their paesani to come work in Omaha. They returned to Lentini and Carlentini several times to offer work and economic opportunity in America. Domenico arrived in New York on September 25, 1920, headed for Omaha. Meanwhile, back in Lentini, little Tecla was born Dec 3. Domenico stayed in Omaha for four years, finally returning to Lentini in 1924. The following year, he again went to America, arriving in New York September 27, 1925, where he gained U.S. citizenship two years later on 2 Aug 1927. Later in 1927, Maria, and little Tecla, now seven, traveled to America, and settled in Brooklyn. Of the nine years hey were married, Domenic and Maria had spent six of them apart, as Domenic earned money in America. They lived their lives in Brooklyn, (Kane Street, and later Henry Street), where they raised Tecla, and two their sons who were born in Brooklyn.
