My Grandfather, Ernest Raymond Nicklas, was born 6 Sep 1879, and was married 19 Sep 1906. So we might think this was taken about 1885, when he was 6.
The front of the picture shows the photo studio as Lewis, in Kingston, NY. Kingston is in Ulster County, where Shandaken is located. The family lived in Shandaken at this time, and must have travelled to Kingston for portraits, or the protographer travelled to them.
