Ancestry From Ireland

Ireland

Now (2022 & 2023) I've travelling to Ireland, and hence getting more interested in discovering my Irish roots.

My Great Grandparents Patrick (or Pádraig) Mona(g)han and Catherine Cahill were married February 25, 1872 in St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn, New York, USA by the Reverend O'Reilly. Patrick was 27 years old, and Catherine was only 16. She'd come to America in May of 1865.

Patrick Monahan, born Mar 1844, had come to America in 1851 (per 1910 census entry) from either County Cavan (family belief), or from Meath in County Mayo (per his Union Army enlistment) at age 6. Immigrating so young, he likely came over with friends or family members.

At age 18 Patrick enlisted into the Union Army in Springfield, Massachusetts on August 5, 1862. He was mustered in Pittsfield a month later, on September 5, 1862, into Company K of the 37th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, as a Private. The 37th was a part of the Army of the Potomac, brigaded with the 10th Massachusetts, 7th Massachusetts, 2nd Rhode Island, and 36th New York. Before the 37th arrived, the brigade fought in the Battles of Antietam (Sharpsburg) and South Mountain in September 1862 when it was commanded by Major General George B. McClellan. Patrick was discharged (with a disability) on January 5, 1863 in Alexandria, VA.

We don't know anything about Patrick's parents, siblings, or any relatives from Ireland.

Catherine Cahill, born in Nov 1852, had come to America in May 1865 (based upon death certificate & 1910 census). Her parents were John Cahill (said to be born about 1824 in Cork) and Margaret Smythe (born 25 April 1822 in Ireland).
